"...but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God..."

What is this all about? I though You knew everything. I mean, its not possible for there to be a single atom in anyone, believer or not, that You do not sustain by Your own Word. There is no such thing as a though or feeling, or action, or even subconscious aspect of anyone that You do not completely understand. So, that is not what this is about, is it?

OK...Some of the Galatians, and the exact ones Paul is addressing, have come to You from idolatry. Greek or Roman Pantheon or Mithrates or whatever.  And they had come to realize some things about You that were very different from any of the concepts they previously held. They had never conceived of the Creator as a Spirit before, they thought You were just like them, only bigger and more powerful, and just as immoral as they were. But now they are beginning to know how different Your love is from anything they ever imagined. They have come far enough for Paul to optimistically say that they know You.  But what does he mean when he says that they have come to be known by You, and that this is even more important than knowing You?

I remember when Jesus, in a parable, rejected some people at the Judgment; people who had preached the Gospel and in His name performed miracles. He didn't say they had sin in their hearts. He did not say they had no faith. He simply said, "Depart from Me, I never knew you."  This has got to be what Paul is talking about. So help me to understand how it is that You want to know me in a way that is different from what I have always believed.

The only way I can think of for You not to know something, is if it doesn't exist.

When the Galatians accepted the Gospel, and Your Son's Spirit came to live in them. Didn't that make them "new creatures?" And another Scripture says that You "jealously desire the Spirit withich You have made to dwell within us." Is this all about the same thing?  When I become a new creature in Christ, and I come to know You in a personal way, You are getting to know the New Me, something even You did not "know" because it did not previously exist. And even though You have foreknowledge of everything, that does not mean that You are not actively participating in the reality of Your own foreknowledge by creating in me, at this moment,  the Image of Christ, something You widh to know.  You not only desire the Spirit You have caused to dwell in me, but as You are now in fellowship with the New Me through the Spirit of Jesus in me, I learn that I am, not the old me, but the New Me, coming to be known by You!

Lord, I can see why Paul was so dissappointed with the Galatians.  Paul has really validated their faith in Your Son, Jesus, even to the point of saying that You have come to know them as new creatures, as a result of Your Spirit's presence working in them. In what greater way could Paul have endorsed their status as believers?  Paul knew that they knew You! Paul knew that Your Spirit was effectively living through them, regenerating them, renewing their minds, sanctifying them, and that You were in personal fellowship with them. What a shock it must have been to them when they began to realise that they were putting even this at risk!  How could someone so close to You think they needed more?

I have done this to You, too?  Oh, that hurts.
Everyone has done this to You? That must hurt even You.

Father, please re-teach us.
Please RE-reveal the Gospel to us.
And this time, help us to really listen.

Thank You for giving me a few minutes of your time. Galatians is a unique letter. It will take some time to get into Paul's mind, and from there to understand what God has chosen to reveal through the disaster that the congregation at Galatia was experiencing.

The effect of these Meditations will be cumulative, and the real benefit may have nothing to do with what I have written. I believe that the discipline of having a brief daily conversation with God about the meaning of a variety of Bible passages over a period of a few weeks, even if you come to some very different conclusions, will still be a wonderful and enlightening experience for you. At DeadRight.net, under the Yellow Pages, is some background info about Galatians. If you missed an earlier Meditation, you can still read it at DeadRight.net by going to the homepage, clicking on Newsletter, and clicking on "browse previous newsletters"
